Essay Development of Bullying
Bullying is an inequitable fight where the person who bullies has the capability over the victim who is abused (Hymel and Swearer, 2009). Bullying and Teasing: No Laughing Matter (n.d.) summarize that bullying behaviour is widespread across the world and it cuts beyond sociology, economic, ethnic, and cultural lines. Bullying is not only physical, but it can also disrupt a person’s life through verbal and cyber bullying.
One of the types of bullying is physical bullying. What is Physical Bullying? (2016) said that physical bullying is when a bully picks on or harasses the victim by confronting them facing each other. Physical bullying can take many forms such as hitting, pushing, tripping, slapping, spitting or stealing. Physical Bully (n.d.) state that physical bullying victims are usually physically weaker than the bullies. They may be differentiated for some reason, including weight, ethnicity, or other characteristics that make it harder for them to fit in.
Next, verbal bullying is a part of bullying. According to How to Counter the Devastating Effects of Verbal Bullying (2016), verbal bullying is a means of using words in a negative way to gain power over someone else’s life. Verbal bullying can be criticism, insults, teasing, putting others down, spreading false rumours or threatening to cause someone harm. What is Verbal Bullying and How to Handle Verbal Bullies (n.d.) explain things that may help to deal with a verbal bully, including by ignoring the bully, telling an authority figure, remaining civil or looking for other sources of enjoyment.
Then, cyberbullying is a part of bullying. According to the Cyberbullying Research Center (2014), cyberbullying is an intentional and repeated harm inflicted through the use of computers, cell phones, and other electronic devices. Cyberbullying ranges from bully sending threatening or taunting messages, hacking into victim’s email account or stealing their online identity to hurt and humiliate them (Robinson & Jeanne, 2016).
